Cannes Award-winning director comes to Madagascar

In 2021, Mamihasina Raminosoa the managing producer of DDC Madagascar had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work directly with a Cannes-award winning director on his latest feature film production. Here are Hasina's reflections of the experience:

I was invited to lead the Malagasy production on a French scripted feature film called "L'Île Rouge” (The Red Island), directed by renowned filmmaker Robin Campillo. This period piece takes us on a captivating journey through the final days of the French colonial era in Madagascar.  With a cast and crew composed of both Europeans and Malagasy, we shot for 20 days in the cities of Antananarivo and Tamatave. A year and a half later, this beautiful cinematic piece is in theaters in France and will soon open across Europe.

Manifesting Madagascar's Potential

I passionately believe that Madagascar has an abundance of potential to offer international production companies. Our country is blessed with inspiring landscapes, extraordinary endemic species, and a vibrant cultural heritage. The presence of 300 European extras found locally for "The Red Island" exemplifies the opportunities Madagascar holds for international productions to venture into unexplored territories, captivating sets, and enthralling narratives.

A Milestone Achievement for DDC Africa

I took charge of directing the performances of the Malagasy actors, while also providing essential production services in Madagascar. It was also a fantastic opportunity for the rest of the DDC team in Madagascar to immerse themselves in a project of such magnitude, creating a film destined for theatrical distribution and film festivals.

Overcoming Challenges, Embracing Culture

Despite the high logistical challenges of producing the film during the COVID-19 lockdown, with its health and travel restrictions, the project was executed smoothly. The European team members regarded the experience as life-transforming, as they were surprised by the level of professionalism exhibited by the host crew. They gained invaluable insights from the Malagasy spirit, which played a role in overcoming numerous challenges throughout the production. The impact was so profound that some team members expressed a desire to settle in Madagascar.

A New Chapter Begins

This film not only marked a significant milestone in my career but also opened up new avenues for DDC. Venturing into the realm of narrative scripted film production, our team began exploring partnerships with writers and directors from across Africa and Latin America. While DDC Madagascar started its journey two decades ago, primarily focusing on documentary videos, this project signifies our entrance into the world of feature films. I am sure this is just the beginning, with more remarkable opportunities to explore uncharted territories and bring captivating narratives to life.
